Wait... Thanksgiving already?
It’s happening. The holidays are inching in to every space….Target (naturally!), TV (hello Hallmark Channel!) and our schedules.
If your family is like mine there are phone calls, emails and texts flying trying to figure out the plan for this year. When will we get together this year? What day, what time, what place, what food? In my mind it should be so much easier. Make a green bean casserole and head over to Mom’s house to enjoy a day of feasting, laughing and maybe even a puzzle. Why can’t it work like that? Why is connecting so complicated? So much scheduling and pre-arranging. Truth is, it’s stressful.
For the Davis family, Round 1 of Holidays 2019 (Thanksgiving) already happened. That’s because we have adult kids with adult kid jobs and significant others and (I think) we have a life too. We coordinated and planned and arranged and penciled each other in for a random November weekend in Grand Rapids. And, I’m here to say that it was worth it. All the coordinating that causes so much stress is worth it. When you see those faces around the table (even if it’s at a restaurant, like our was) all the rest melts away. These are your people. And you’re together. And I think that connection was the point all along.
Dan and I came away with what our hearts needed - them. So can I encourage
you to push into every thing it takes to be together this season? Whatever your
next weeks hold let go of what doesn’t matter and pursue what does. It may not
come together easily or end up picture perfect but so what? Perfect isn’t the
goal, being together is. Here’s to a season of connection.
