Rhythm for the Holidays
Topic: Sunday Message Verse: Luke 10:38–10:42
The Challenge of Rhythm
Rhythm: How do you live a life that works and matter in a busy world filled with competing demands?
Works but doesn't Matter
A life that works but doesn’t matter: “I’m getting a lot done, but I’m focusing on the wrong things.” (wrong things = secondary priorities). DISTRACTED.
Matters but doesn't Work
A life that matters but doesn’t work: “I’m focusing on the right things, but I’m not getting much done.” OVERWHELMED
Works AND Matters
As followers of Jesus, we want a life that both works and matters— loving God and loving others as we know and do His will.
Luke 10:38-42 NIV
As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."
Holiday Rhythm with God
ADVENT is a Christ-centered worship practice among Christians to help them stay in rhythm with God in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
ADVENT can be observed: in your church; in your home; in your personal life
Advent Resources Mentioned
(1) Advent candles: three purple candles for the first three Sundays; a pink candle for the final Sunday; a white candle for Christmas Eve/Day. (2) Advent book for the home: "Unwrapping the Greatest Gift: A Family Celebration of Christmas" by Ann Voskamp. (3) Advent reading plans on You Version app: Go to "reading plans" tab, then "browse plans" option. Under "Christmas and Advent plans, look for "Good News of Great Joy" (personal plan) or "Countdown to Christmas" (family plan).
Mark 10:45 NIV
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
Holiday Rhythm with Others
Ministering to others: through your Community Group; through your home; through your church.
Specific Ministry Opportunities
(1) Community Groups: Groups can pick up a Christmas Eve Offering gift packet (gas, groceries, and utilities) at the Adult Ministries desk or the church office during the week. (2) Christmas Eve Offering: Giving to this annual ministry fund happens during December leading up to our Christmas Eve services. To date, we have collected over $376,000, which has been used to minister to people outside the walls of this church, both locally and globally.
