You shall have no other gods before me

January 18, 2015 Speaker: Dan Davis Series: the TEN

Topic: Sunday Message Verse: Exodus 20:3

Three Main Purposes of the TEN

(1) EXPRESS God’s character so we can know what He’s like. (2) EXPOSE our need for Jesus and drive us to His gospel. (3) ENCOURAGE us as Christians to please God in all we do.

Exodus 20:1-3 NIV

And God spoke all these words: "I am the lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. "You shall have no other gods before me.

Romans 6:17-18 NIV

But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

Everybody Worships

“Everyone worships something or someone. People chart the course of their lives based on what they believe really matters. We worship what we supremely value or admire most. We are incurably religious. Whatever our hearts embrace and long for in time of need becomes our god.” (Michael Moriarity)

Maximum Heart Capacity: One

Not only are we created to worship God, and not only is He alone worthy of our worship, but when it comes to our heart, we’re only capable of worshipping one. Only one. That's how we’re designed. And when we try to worship two, we really end up worshipping none.

Joshua 24:14-16 NIV

"Now fear the lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the lord. But if serving the lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the lord." Then the people answered, "Far be it from us to forsake the lord to serve other gods!

1 Kings 18:21 NIV

Elijah went before the people and said, "How long will you waver between two opinions? If the lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him." But the people said nothing.

 Matthew 6:24 NIV

"No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

Keeping the First Commandment

Resisting other gods is not enough; we need to run after the Lord. The best defense is a great offense. Matthew 6:33 - "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness."

Keeping the First Commandment

Look to Jesus and continually rely upon His grace. We need His grace to obey and we need grace when we (not if) fail.

Our Need for Grace

O to grace how great a debtor Daily I’m constrained to be! Let Thy goodness like a fetter Bind my wandering heart to Thee. Prone to wander—Lord, I feel it—Prone to leave the God I love; Here’s my heart—O take and seal it, Seal it for Thy courts above.
