You shall not make for yourself an image
Topic: Sunday Message Verse: Exodus 20:4–20:6
Exodus 20:4-6 NIV
"You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
Exodus 20:1-3 NIV
And God spoke all these words: "I am the lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. "You shall have no other gods before me.
Worship: Who & How
Commandment #1 addresses WHO we worship ("don’t worship false gods"); Commandment #2 addresses HOW we worship ("don’t worship the true God in false ways")
John 4:19-24 NIV
"Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem." "Woman," Jesus replied, "believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth."
Worship Trap #1
(1) We MINIMIZE GOD & reduce Him down to our level.
Isaiah 55:8-9 NIV
"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the lord. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Worship Trap #2
2. We MANAGE GOD & take Him on our terms, not His.
Worship Trap #3
3. We MANIPULATE GOD & try to get Him to serve us.
2 Chronicles 6:18 NIV
"But will God really dwell on earth with humans? The heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!
Through Jesus, we now can relate to the God who seemed so unrelatable (too big, too powerful, too distant)
John 1:14 NIV
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Colossians 1:15 NIV
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
The Nature of Worship
Worship is a matter of the heart. It has to do with our devotion and what we look to for meaning and purpose, for security and significance. Worship is what we trust in; it’s what we run after; it’s what we build our lives upon.
Because of Jesus, we have life. We have love. We have hope. We have peace. We have joy in ways that anyone or anything else in this world cannot offer. You don’t need to look for anything more, anything new, or anything different. And if something else or someone else has captured that place in your heart that should be reserved for Jesus, then confess that sin, let go of that small-g god in your life, turn back to the Lord, and experience His grace once again. For Jesus Christ alone is worthy of all your worship, exclusively and entirely. "You shall have no other gods before Him.” For a time is coming, when every knee shall bow, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.
