Topic: Sunday Message Verse: Ecclesiastes 3:11, Ecclesiastes 7:2, Mark 1:15, Galatians 3:10, Galatians 3:13, 1 Corinthians 15:21–15:26, Romans 10:9, John 17:3

Ecclesiastes 3:11 NIV

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

The Ache of Eternity

"We are wired for eternity but we're also cursed by death." Because of that, our hearts long for far more than our bodies are capable of giving us. We feel like this isn't the way things are supposed to be... and we're right.

Ecclesiastes 7:2 NIV

It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of everyone; the living should take this to heart.

Death means...

People have many views of death. Death means: (1) Mystery; (2) Extinction; (3) Sleep: (4) Transcendence; (5) Transition. So what's right? One of them? Some of them? All of them? Or none of the above.

The Christian View of Death

Instead of seeing death as an ending to accept, Christianity sees death as an enemy to defeat.

Mark 1:15 NIV

"The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!"

Galatians 3:10 NIV

For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law."

Galatians 3:13 NIV

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole."

1 Corinthians 15:21-26 NIV

For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

Romans 10:9 NIV

If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

John 17:3 NIV

Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

Death: Defeated and Destroyed

Jesus confronted death on the Cross. Jesus conquered death when He rose from the dead. And Jesus will destroy death once and for all when He comes again.
