July 31, 2016 Series: Heroes
Topic: Sunday Message Verse: Romans 16:1–16:2, 1 Timothy 3:8–3:13
Week four in a series where we meet men and women of heroic faith in the Bible and learn from their example.
Romans 16:1-2 NIV
1 I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon of the church in Cenchreae. 2 I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of his people and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been the benefactor of many people, including me.
Paul describes Phoebe as a :
* Sister in Christ
* Servant (deacon) of her church
* Supporter (benefactor) of the Lord's mission
Overall in the New Testament, it seems that "deacons" were recognized servants in the church - men and women who served alongside the overseers and elders in shepherding the congregation. Think of them as "ministry helpers" or "ministry assistants."
1 Timothy 3:8-13 NIV
8 In the same way, deacons are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. 9 They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons. 11 In the same way, the women are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything. 12 A deacon must be faithful to his wife and must manage his children and his household well. 13 Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.
As we grow in Christ, God intends to reorder our priorities. More and more, He'll move us away from focus on ourselves - our comfort, our stuff, our adventures, our wealth - to focus on Him and His Kingdom.
1. Be a sister (or brother) in Christ.
2. Be a servant of your church.
3. Be a supporter of the Lord's mission.
