Holy Spirit 7.09.17

The first of ten messages in our summer series, "More Than a Song," where we'll explore the priority of worship and the power of music

The song we’ll look at today is “Holy Spirit,” written by Katie and Bryan Torwalt, worship leaders at a church in Sacramento, California, called Jesus Culture.

This song is about God's presence. Let's talk more about that:

The REALITY of God’s presence.
Our RESPONSIBILITY for God’s presence.
Our RESPONSE to all this.

God is fully present everywhere.

Jeremiah 23:23-24 NIV

23 “Am I only a God nearby,”declares the Lord,“and not a God far away? 24 Who can hide in secret placesso that I cannot see them?”declares the Lord.“Do not I fill heaven and earth?”declares the Lord.

Psalm 139:7-10 NIV

7 Where can I go from your Spirit?Where can I flee from your presence? 8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. 9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10 even there your hand will guide me,your right hand will hold me fast.

God also chooses to be specially present in specific places.

1. In the tabernacle (Exodus 40:34-35)
2. In the Temple (1 Kings 8:10-11, 27)
3. In Jesus

John 1:14 NIV

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 14:9 NIV

9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

But what about now? The tabernacle is long gone. The temple was destroyed in AD70. Jesus completed His work on earth and ascended back to Heaven. That’s where the Holy Spirit comes in!

In the Holy Spirit, God is present in us individually and among us corporately.

John 14:16-17 NIV

16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NIV

19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

Ephesians 2:21-22 NIV

21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

Our RESPONSIBILITY for God's presence.

Wayne Grudem writes that “the Holy Spirit gives stronger or weaker evidence of the presence and blessing of God according to our response to Him.” (Systematic Theology, 636)

* Make it your priority to love and learn His Word (Col 3:16).

* Use good Christian songs as a way of meditating on His Word and encouraging other believers (Ephesians 5:18-19).

* Develop the habit of saying thank you to God in every circumstance every day (Ephesians 5:20)

* Allow the Holy Spirit to teach you to pray over time (Ephesians 6:18).

* Take every opportunity to be a blessing to others around you (Romans 14:17).

DON’T resist, grieve or quench the Holy Spirit’s work in your life.

Our RESPONSE to all this

Holy Spirit . . .

Let us become more aware of Your presence
Let us experience the glory of Your goodness
