Engage and Enjoy
Topic: Sunday Message Verse: John 1:14, Galatians 3:28, 2 Corinthians 5:17, 2 Corinthians 5:14–5:15
A three-week message series to challenge us to engage wholeheartedly with the Lord and the mission of His church, rather than just sit passively on the sidelines watching life go by.
A Time for New Beginnings
September is the time for fresh starts and new beginnings—summer vacations are over, kids are back in school, and we’re thinking through some of the personal changes we want to make in our lives. Even around the church, everything starts up again: from Hopevale Kids Ministry and Youth Ministry kicking off last week to Community Groups and Classes beginning this week. So as we head into the fall, what does God have in store for you personally and for us as a church?
Our Mission at Hopevale Church
We are a community of grace and truth inviting people to know and follow Jesus.
This one sentence mission statement is rooted in the timeless truths of Scripture and the Good News of Jesus Christ, and it serves as a compass for our church to help us discern: where we are in the present, where God wants us in the future, and then the steps we need to take to get there.
A Community of Grace and Truth
It is Jesus in all His grace and truth (John 1:14) that defines us as a faith community. Now more than ever before it’s important to understand that Jesus Christ is the common bond where we find our unity as a church. We live in such divisive and polarizing times, where groups of people (and even churches) want to draw lines and create identities based on something other than Jesus. We can’t let it happen here because that’s not the church.
Galatians 3:28 NIV
28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Knowing Jesus is much more than just a head knowledge; it's also a heart response, where God opens our spiritual eyes to see our need for a Savior and we realize that Jesus Christ is that Savior for us.
When that happens, everything changes: our sins are forgiven; our guilty record before a holy God is erased; hell is shunned; heaven is gained; we experience that deep sense of belonging our hearts long for because we’re brought into God’s forever family as His beloved daughters and sons; we’re given the gift of His indwelling Holy Spirit who empowers us and frees us to overcome the failures of our past and to grow into the kind of people God intends us to become; and then from there, we’re called into God’s story and sent into God’s mission to live for the greatest purpose possible.
2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
Knowing Jesus as our Savior and being changed by Him isn’t the end of the story. No, it’s just the beginning. It’s the beginning of a lifelong journey of following Jesus and letting His change work itself out in every area of our lives. That is God’s plan for us as Christians. The one who knows Jesus should naturally want to follow Jesus because our lives are changed and our hearts are captured by God's great love for us. This is what it means to live an engaged life, where we do so much more than just mark our days and pass the time.
2 Corinthians 5:14-15 NIV
14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.
