The Value of Shared Ministry

One of the five core ministry values of our church that is part of our DNA is the value of shared ministry, which says that we want to be the kind of church where everybody is doing something rather than some people doing everything. Let's be that kind of church because everyone has something to offer, including you.

Hebrews 12:1-2 NIV
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

The Joy of Serving

We experience deep joy and lasting fulfillment when we serve. That joy shows up in our lives in these three specific ways:
(1) The Joy of God's GLORY
(2) The Joy of Their GOOD
(3) The Joy of Your GROWTH

(1) The Joy of God's GLORY

It's incredible to think that mere, flawed mortals like us could actually do something that would bring praise and glory to our God. What an honor and privilege. There is nothing else you could possibly accomplish with your life that would be more sacred and more satisfying than that.

1 Peter 4:10-11 NIV
10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

(2) The Joy of Their GOOD

There is an indescribable feeling that comes when we help someone else and do so with “no strings attached.” We're not doing it for the recognition or a payback. Rather, we serve with their best in mind. It simply flows from a grateful heart, expressing the same grace to them in our serving that we ourselves have experienced from God.

Acts 20:35 NIV
35 In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”

Galatians 6:9-10 NIV
9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

(3) The Joy of Your GROWTH

If you want to be the best possible version of yourself, then follow in the footsteps of Jesus and serve other people. Even those outside the church recognize that volunteerism can be personally transformational in areas like our time management, skills development, physical health, and emotional well-being. Think about the most admirable people in your own life--they're the ones who serve with an others-centered focus and don't make everything about themselves.

Matthew 16:25 NIV
25 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.

This is the estimated amount of total hours served this past year by the church in and through the ministries of Hopevale. That's incredible. As we look ahead and build upon this wonderful foundation, let's find our fit. Let’s use our gifts. Let’s serve other people. And then, let’s watch God work!

Connections Questions

Life is found when it’s not about us—when we follow Jesus by using our unique God-given gifts to help others by putting their needs ahead of our own. That’s where the joy is found. Pastor Dan

1. Did you take the spiritual gifts survey online or at the Sunday Night Spotlight? What did you think? What were your top three gifts?

2. Share a time that you experienced joy and fulfillment in serving others. What was the situation? How did you serve? What was the result for others and for you?

3. What can keep us from finding joy in serving others? What can we do about these things?

4. Read Matthew 16:24-27 in a few translations. What does Jesus mean by “losing” our lives for Him (v25)? How do we “find” our life? How does all this work out in your everyday life?

If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. Matthew 16:25 (New Living Translation)

5. What are some ways you are thinking differently about spiritual gifts and serving others because of this message series? What remaining questions do you have?

6. What’s next for you?
