Resisting the Outward Chaos
Topic: Sunday Message Verse: 1 John 2:18–2:27, John 16:13, John 14:6–14:7
A 13-week message series in the book of 1 John
This is our series half-time Sunday. In addition to communion, we'll have a Q & A session to address your questions from the 1 John series so far. You can submit your question with the tear-off section of our bulletin. We'll try to get to as many questions as we can. That Sunday, you can also sign-up to join the new 6-week D-groups which will launch the following Sunday, March 3.
1 John 2:18-21 NIV
18 Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us. 20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth. 21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth.
Encouragement--words of comfort
For all Christians ("dear children"), John points us to from FORGIVENESS from God and FELLOWSHIP with God in Jesus.
For mature Christians ("fathers"), John reminds us of our FOUNDATION in Jesus.
For still maturing Christians ("young men"), John tells us we're in a spiritual FIGHT but that we have victory because of Jesus.
John 16:13 NIV
13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
1 John 2:22-23 NIV
22 Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.
1 John 2:24-27 NIV
24 As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is what he promised us—eternal life. 26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. 27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.
John 14:6-7 NIV
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
Two Keys to a Confident Faith
Believing in the Jesus in history (actual events) + listening to the Spirit in you (personal experience)... where the head and the heart come together.
Both knowledge and trust are important--they should complement each other, not compete against each other.
How can I know more about Jesus and His Gospel of hope?
Where should I trust more in Jesus and His Gospel of hope?
