July 7, 2019 Speaker: Sam Burke Series: Plot Twists

Topic: Sunday Message Verse: John 8:31–8:36, Galatians 5:1–5:6, Galatians 5:13–5:14

Some of the most memorable moments in movies and books are when the unexpected happens. These moments take our breath away, and leave us in a state of shock. These small surprises can significantly shift these stories into new, interesting, and even dark places. What if there were things in our lives that seemed small but that could surprisingly shift our stories?

John 8:31-36 NIV

31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” 34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Old Covenant Thinking: I do...Therefore, God does
New Covenant Thinking: God did...Therefore, I do

Galatians 5:1-6, 13-14 NIV

1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. 2 Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all. 3 Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law. 4 You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. 5 For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.

13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
In Christ, we are set free so that we can stay free
