A seven-week series about entering into and experiencing more of the LIFE that only Jesus gives.
Why Are We Here?
We usually fill our lives with safe questions like, "How's the weather?" or "Did you see the game?" but rarely do we ask deeper and dangerous questions like "Why am I here? Why do I exist? What is the meaning of my life?"
Three Essential Realities of Life
1. There is a God.
2. You have a soul.
3. Both are eternal.
We don't see them. We can't prove them. Still we all have moments in life when we cannot deny them. This is why we ask ourselves deep questions, knowing that there's more to this life than just this life.
Psalms 8:3-4 NIV
3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?
Psalms 139:13-14 NIV
13 For you created my inmost being;you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;your works are wonderful,I know that full well.
Jesus is the Answer
While it might sound like something you'd expect the pastor today, Jesus truly is the answer to our deepest questions, but maybe not in the way you'd think.
One of Jesus' closest friends named John wrote a biography of Jesus that addresses our deepest questions, and to start he goes all the way back to the very beginning before time began in eternity past.
John 1:1-5 NIV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Two Concepts of "life"
Back in Jesus' day, there were two different Greek terms that could be translated into our English word “life.” One is the term “bios.” It's where we get words like: biology, biography, biochemistry, where “life” is described as our “physical or bodily existence.”
But that’s not the word John uses here. No, John uses the other the Greek term for “life” and that’s “zoe.” This is a word that speaks more to the deepest and most profound matters like meaning, purpose, and fulfillment.”
“In Jesus, there is zoe LIFE, and this zoe LIFE is the light of all mankind.”
John 1:14 NIV
14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 10:10 NIV
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
John 14:6 NIV
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 6:35 NIV
35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
Our Mission Statement
We are a community of grace and truth inviting people to know and follow Jesus.
This is why we exist because this is where LIFE is found.
Two LIFE Challenges
1. Enter into LIFE by knowing Jesus personally as your Savior.
1 John 5:11-12 NIV
11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
Two LIFE Challenges
2. Experience more of LIFE by following Jesus fully as your Lord.
Sermon Questions for Discussion
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. –John 10:10
1. How often do you think about questions like these and how confident are you in your answer?
a. Why are we here?
b. Why do I even exist in the first place?
c. What is the meaning and purpose of my life?
2. Where does God fit into your answer?
3. Pastor Dan said: “If there’s any place where we should try to make sense of our lives and our world, it should be at church.” Agree? Disagree? Why?
4. On a scale of 1-10, how much do you feel that you’re personally experiencing LIFE in Jesus? What’s getting in the way of you experiencing more?
5. Read John 1:1-5, John 6:35, and John 14:6-7. What does John say about LIFE? Where does John say that LIFE comes from? According to John, how does that LIFE become our own?
6. What are ways the church can help you enter into LIFE by knowing Jesus and/or experience more of LIFE by following Jesus?
